MSN Spaces Tops In Blogs

By David A. Utter

Microsoft noted how its MSN Spaces blogging service drew more than 100 million visitors in April, and that does not even include its 20 million unique visitors in China.

Nearly one in seven global Internet users have visited MSN Spaces, according to comScore Media Metrix.

"The trend in more user-generated content represents a shift in the way that media is created and consumed online," said Peter Daboll, CEO of comScore Media Metrix.

The figures show impressive growth in visits to MSN Spaces. Traffic increased from 41.65 million over 12 months to 101 million in April 2006.

Currently, MSN Spaces allows its users to create blogs. Those users can also share photos, which they do at a pace of over 6 million photos uploaded to the service each day, and more than 2.5 billion uploaded since the service launched in December 2004.

Eventually, MSN Spaces will be superceded by Windows Live Spaces, as Microsoft continues to replace the MSN name throughout its various properties.

When Windows Live spaces launches later in 2006, it will have some extra features.

A social networking component and the ability to create and add Microsoft Gadgets to Spaces sites will be part of the new functionality.

The MSN Spaces page said Windows Live Spaces will launch in the summer of 2006.

On June 5th, MSN Spaces will change all of the URLs for the site. Instead of spaces.msn.com/Name, they will read Name.spaces.msn.com.

One commenter on the official MSN Spaces blog suggested the change could be to make the URLs easier to type on mobile phones, which would hint at a bigger push into the mobile space.
